London Software Systems (LSS) is a joint research institute established by the Distributed Software Engineering Research Group at Imperial College London and the Software Systems Engineering Research Group at University College London.

With its total of roughly 65 academic and research staff, LSS develops techniques and tools for designing large-scale complex information technology systems, focusing on engineering solutions that are lightweight and carefully targeted towards significant real-world problems.

Both Imperial College and UCL have research groups of outstanding international quality in the area of software systems engineering and have an excellent track record of obtaining EPSRC, EU and industrial funding. The groups have a shared research approach driven by case studies combined with rigorous analysis and validated in practice through collaboration and consultancy with industry. LSS are particularly aware of the need for software systems engineering techniques, methods and tools to scale and to be simple enough that they can be adopted in practice. In addition, the groups have a common specialisation in the principled construction of large-scale potentially mobile, distributed systems and in the provision of infrastructure to support change, evolution and management in systems that may also have stringent quality-of-service requirements.

Main contributions of the LSS of the Imperial College London and the University College London to SENSORIA are in the areas of concurrent, distributed and mobile programming, formal specification and refinement, foundations of service-oriented computing, security, automated verification, Web engineering and Web services, software architecture and modelling, and model-driven development.
